アクアマリンは3月の誕生石として知られています。ラテン語で海水を由来として名付けられたそうです。その色味や透明感から、美しい海や水面を思い浮かべる方が多いのではないでしょうか。
ギリシャ神話では「海の精霊の宝物が海岸に打ち上げられて石となった」のがアクアマリンだというストーリーがあり、波を落ち着かせる力があると信じられていたことから、ヨーロッパの船乗りたちは船旅のお守りとして大切に持っていたとか。また人間関係に潤いをもたらすとも信じられ、「結婚や出産の際に贈られると幸せになれる」石として大切な方へのギフトにも選ばれてきました。
鉱物学ではアクアマリンはベリルグループに入ります。ベリルグループといえばエメラルドやモルガナイト、ヘリオドールなど、透明度が高く魅力的な宝石ばかりです。
アクアマリンの水色は内部に含有される微量の鉄分によるもので、鉄の含有量によってブルーの濃さが変わります。
