その昔日本でも「加賀紫」の名で珍重された良質なアメシストが石川県で採掘されていました。平安時代の頃から京の都では帯留めやかんざしに用いられ人気だったそうです。

色は濃い紫や薄い紫だけではなく、グレイッシュな色合いもあります。濃い色と薄い色の直線状の帯が見られ、カラーバンディングと呼ばれる色ムラがあるのも特徴です。

英名は、ギリシア語で「酔わせない」を意味する「amethustos」が由来です。このことからアメシストには酔いを防ぐ効果があると信じられていて、古代の人々はお守り代わりに持ち歩いていたとか。お酒が好きな方へのプレゼントに選ぶのも良さそうですね。
